Vienna, Austria and Copenhagen, Denmark, retained their positions as first and second most liveable cities in the world in EIU’s 2023 Global Liveability report. The Middle East has seen the average level of liveability continue to improve, largely owing to strong gains in healthcare and education ratings. The strongest performers were the cities of Riyadh and Jeddah in Saudi Arabia, both rising by five places. In the UAE, although Abu Dhabi did not go up the ranks, its scores improved to 80, helping it achieve the top-tier status of liveability.

Lagos, Nigeria has been listed as the fourth worst city to live in the world by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), one of the agencies under The Economist of London. Lagos was the second worst liveable city in 2022, but has now moved two spots up in EIU’s 2023 Global Liveability report. The EIU said the economic capital of Nigeria moved two spots up due to improvements in healthcare and education. It was however stated that corruption is still a problem.
Damascus (Syria) and Tripoli (Libya) are still at the bottom of the list, held back by social unrest, terrorism and conflict. Read More

Nova Bus is exiting bus production in the US market. Consequently, the company has decided to close its Plattsburgh manufacturing and delivery facility by 2025. Production in North America will be focused to its Canadian facilities located in Saint-Eustache and Saint-François-du-Lac (Quebec) and Nova Bus will continue its successful Canadian business, where it is the market leader. A restructuring provision of SEK 1.3 billion will negatively impact the Volvo Group’s operating income in the second quarter of 2023. “The strategic decision to end bus production in the US by 2025 was made after evaluating its profitability, which was experiencing continued financial losses over the years,” says Anna Westerberg, Chair of the Nova Bus Board of Directors.

Nova Bus will work closely with employees, customers, and suppliers as bus operations in the Plattsburgh facility are planned to continue until the first quarter of 2025. Nova Bus will continue to support its US customers’ parts and service needs.

“Although this strategic decision is a difficult one, by changing our business model with a focus on Canada, we will improve profitability and secure our long-term competitiveness,” adds Ralph Acs, President of Nova Bus. Read More

U.S government is facilitating a strategic energy dialogue (SED) with stakeholders in Nigeria’s energy sector to foster collaboration in advancing energy partnerships and energy transition. “The US wants to be the preferred partner of energy transition and security. We know you work with a lot of partners around the world but we have a wonderful opportunity to do more bilaterally because we already have a strong corporate footprint here and I think that a prospect for that to grow even further as our companies see president Tinubu and his government tackling some of the difficult issues of the past like the exchange rate unification, but I also see prospects for us to do more in these emerging areas,” he said.

He said the SED is about creating mechanisms for ongoing exchange between experts from both countries, as they navigate issues around energy security, transition and access while Proffering sustainable solutions.

He said Nigeria and USA are similar in many instances especially as big Oil and Gas explorers looking to better manage their resources in a way that does the least damage possible. “We all need to double down our focus on the energy transition and the opportunities there, what that transition looks like is going to vary from country to country. Government cannot maintain a constituency for energy transition except they can demonstrate energy security and reliability,” he said.

He also hinted on possible inflow of investments on the back of what he described as the bold policy reforms president Tinubu is embarking on. Read More
